Passage One
Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.
People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June.
Mother’s Day was proclaimed (宣布) a day for national observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. Anna Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia, had started the idea to have a day to honor mothers. She was the one who chose the second Sunday in May and also began the custom of wearing a carnation.
In 1909, Mrs. Dodd from Spokane, Washington, thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers. She wanted to honor her own father, William Smart. After her mother died, he had the responsibility of raising a family of five sons and a daughter. In 1910, the first Father’s Day was observed in Spokane. Senator Margaret Chase Smith helped to establish Father’s Day as a national commemorative day.
These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Passage Two
Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.
For years, scientists believed that human brain development was completed by the time we were 10 or 11. Recent studies, however, show that during our teenage years, our brain is still maturing in important ways. When we’re teenagers, our decision-making ability is developing and we’re learning to make good choices. At the same time, we’re more likely than ever to take risks. Is this normal? Scientists who study the brain say “yes”. In fact, they believe that risk-taking and our “irrational” behaviors may actually help teens to become successful adults.
Take, for example, the teenager’s love of thrills. We all like new and exciting things, but never as much as we do during our teenage years. During this time of our lives, scientists say, our brains produce chemicals that can lead to dangerous behaviors, and it can also produce positive ones. Taking risks and trying new things may be challenging or even dangerous, but this behavior can also lead to useful experiences that will benefit us as adults.
Scientists also find there is an intense need for peer (同龄人) approval among teenagers. We enter a world made by our parents. But we will live most of our lives and succeed in a world run by our peers. Therefore, it is important that we are accepted and respected by our peers, even if it means taking some risks to fit it.
6. What did recent studies find about human brain development?
A
Human brain development was completed by the time we were 10.
B
Human brain keeps developing during our teenage years.
C
Human brain development is not completed until we are adults.

Passage Three
Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.
If you look around, there are probably many coffeehouses (咖啡馆) near you. Coffee is a very big business. According to the International Coffee Organization, the world drinks about $70 billion in coffee each year.
Although coffee is one of the world’s most popular drinks, many people believe it isn’t healthy. It has been blamed for high heart rates, high blood pressure, and stomach problems. Coffee can make you feel more stressed and it can lead to sleep problems. Don’t even think about drinking coffee before you go to bed, or you’ll be up all night!
One common belief is that some women who drink coffee may have a hard time getting pregnant (怀孕). Others believe coffee can cause low birth weight if pregnant women drink it.
Medical research, however, has started suggesting that coffee might actually be good for us. It can give us energy, and it is thought to be helpful for headaches. It can protect our bodies against harmful substances in things like smoke and pollution. Overall, research shows that coffee is far more healthful than harmful.
While coffee may have health benefits, it is also full of caffeine which can make us feel excited. However, the problems can be controlled by limiting the amount of coffee we drink. There is no evidence that coffee is more truly harmful, and every day there is more evidence to show that it is good for us.
