City: New York City, USA Neighborhood: Inwood
When you hear the word “Manhattan,” what do you think of? Tall buildings, the Statute of Liberty, theatres, crowded streets? Well, all of those things are in Manhattan. My neighborhood—Inwood—is in Manhattan, too, but it’s very different from the rest of the city. Why? Well, for one thing, there’s a lot of greenery in this neighborhood. In fact, we have a forest in Inwood. Many of its trees are hundreds of years old and there are lots of small animals and wild birds. You can go hiking in some parts of it and get lost!
Many buildings in this neighborhood are old, too. For example, there’s a farmhouse near my home. It’s over 200 years old. Today it’s a museum.
Inwood is an interesting neighborhood. It’s a quiet place where you can hike in the park. But then you can take a subway and, in 20 minutes, you can be in busy midtown Manhattan.
If you’re ever in New York City, come and visit Inwood and see a part of Manhattan you didn’t know existed. You’ll be glad you did!
City: Fes, Morocco Neighborhood: Fes-al-Bali
My name is Farid and I live in Fes-al-Bali—a neighborhood in Fes that’s over 1,200 years old. You can find everything in my neighborhood—restaurants, shops, cafes, tearooms, and theatres. There are something like 10,000 businesses. We’ve also got one of the oldest universities in the world—the University of Al-Karaouine. It opened in the year 859.
The whole neighborhood of Fes-al-Bali is surrounded by a high wall with gates. You can drive inside the main gate, but once in, you can only travel through the streets on foot, by bicycle…or donkey! In fact, Fes-al-Bali is one of the largest car-free areas in the world. Still, the streets get pretty crowded—mostly because they’re very narrow. Oh, and speaking of the streets, there are over 9,000 of them. It takes about 40 minutes to walk from one end of my neighborhood to the other, but be careful—the streets aren’t straight. They’re very long and winding and it’s easy to get lost. Just last week I had to help some tourists from Australia.
If you’re ever in Morocco, be sure to spend some time in Fes—and in my neighborhood, Fes-al-Bali. It’s a place you’ll never forget.
